From Stone Walls to Green Gardens
PRIVATE EXCURSION TO STON FROM DUBROVNIK | OYSTER FARMS | TRSTENO - ARBORETUM PARK
A private excursion to the ancient town of Ston in a luxury vehicle is a pleasant escape from the busy city of Dubrovnik and an opportunity to visit Ston’s City Walls and Arboretum – Medieval Botanical Garden. Located at the very beginning of the Peljesac Peninsula, this historical town is famous for several reasons and thus a popular destination for private tours. First, its ancient walls dating back to the 14th century, are the second longest walls in Europe (5mi / 8 km) and stretch over 5 kilometers around the town. Second, it is also home to 2000-year-old salt pans, which are still used in production today. Lastly, it has some of the most delicious oysters around.
The tour departs from Dubrovnik and begins by visiting several old churches and exploring the town’s magnificent architecture, prior to climbing a section of the Walls of Ston open for visitors. These walls with over 20 towers continue to dominate the hill above Ston today. The city walls represent an impressive review of this town’s past. Ston was, in fact, among the first areas in Europe built according to a town-planning project. After visiting the walls and making a short stop to view the salt pans, the journey continues with Ston’s oyster farms. Due to a unique ecological balance, the Gulf of Ston is home to a variety of oysters that have died out elsewhere in the world. Fortunately, there are delicious local restaurants where this delicacy can be enjoyed, along with many other Dalmatian specialties.
Following lunch, the tour continues to the village of Trsteno, home to some of the oldest examples of medieval garden architecture in Croatia. Acknowledged as one of the finest gardens in Europe with over 300 exotic trees and plants, the Arboretum is over 500 years old and was even used for filming the famous HBO series, Game of Thrones. Here, there will be an opportunity to enjoy the magnificent scenery, including the manor, pavilion, aqueduct, Baroque fountain, and 60-meter-tall Plane trees, before returning to Dubrovnik where the tour ends.
